HouShi "Pine Smoke" Red Clay Tea pot
后石《松烟》柴烧朱泥壶
Crafted entirely by hand, each Red clay teapot undergoes the traditional wood-firing process, where flame, ash, and clay interact naturally within the kiln. During firing, the oxygen within the chamber gradually decreases as the wood continues to burn at high temperatures, creating a reduction atmosphere that draws the iron-rich elements within the clay to the surface. This transformation gives the teapot its deepened tones, subtle dark variations, and richly textured character.
Rather than a uniform finish, the surface carries the unpredictable traces of fire — ash markings, carbon shadows, and natural tonal shifts shaped entirely by the kiln. No two pieces are ever alike.
Wood-fired Red clay is especially valued for its breathable porous structure and lively mineral quality. With use, the clay gradually absorbs tea oils and develops a softer, deeper sheen over time. When warmed with water, the teapot releases a gentle warmth and naturally enhances the fragrance and body of the tea.
Particularly suited for oolong teas — especially Wuyi Rock tea — the clay softens roasted edges while deepening mineral notes, aroma, and lingering sweetness, allowing the tea to unfold with greater depth and roundness.
Material
Red clay
Technique
Traditional wood-firing (柴烧), fully handmade construction.
