Artist Statement
We are constantly exploring how to establish a deep relationship with materials, from understanding to application. We choose a relatively restrained approach to expression. The preference for non-figurative narratives in our objects and furniture places our understanding of Eastern aesthetics behind the experience. The experience of volume, the heaviness of metal and the lightness of paper, the contrast when lifting, the feeling of gently picking up and solemnly putting down.
The "skin-like" feel of an object's surface is a quality we achieve through the bridging of lacquer and paper. We eliminate the coldness of metal, bringing out a warm surface through the combination of paper and lacquer. This patina develops with use, creating a deep emotional connection with the object. We hope to prolong the aftertaste of this experience, a feeling worthy of prolonged reflection, a calmness in the face of uncertainty in life. Respect the answers given by time, cherish the present moment, revere life, and avoid being disrespectful.
I love the work of Zhang Hao and Chen Yi. In their hands, lacquer resembles a series of overlapping mountains. In the gallery, each of their works resembles ancient landscapes, embodying the essence of Yushu's carefully selected works, making them irresistible to guests. Looking forward to October's "Ten Thousand Mountains.”
