XiaoYe "Black-Glazed Rustic" Gaiwan

£90.00

小叶手作粗陶黑釉盖碗

While brewing old tree yellow tea, the large size of the leaves calls for a wide-opening gaiwan that allows them to unfurl fully.

Xiaoye’s gaiwan offers exactly this. This handmade gaiwan is crafted from coarse Yixing ( purple ) clay using the traditional wheel-throwing technique, preserving a raw and earthy texture. The exterior is finished with a matte iron-black glaze, giving the piece a quiet, understated presence, while the interior is coated with a natural plant-ash glaze that appears warm and luminous when filled with tea.

The surface reveals subtle variations and kiln-fired traces, creating a layered texture with a delicate metallic sheen under light. The bowl gently opens upward, forming a balanced and restrained silhouette. The small lid knob stands upright with a distinctive hand-formed character, reflecting the individuality of the maker.

The contrast between the rustic clay body and the soft interior glaze highlights both strength and refinement. Fired at high temperature, the glaze and clay fuse closely together, resulting in a tactile surface and durable structure.

Quiet, grounded, and elegant, this gaiwan is suitable both for daily tea brewing and as an object of contemplative beauty.

Material: Yixing ( purple ) coarse clay, blended with sand

Technique: Wheel-thrown, Electric Kiln
