Yujian Chaozhou Red Clay Long Dan Teapot

£200.00

煜堅潮州朱泥龍旦壺 Yujian Chaozhou Red Clay Shuiping Teapot

The Yujian Chaozhou Red Clay Long Dan Teapot, crafted by artisan Yujian, merges centuries-old craftsmanship with the playful but elegant design of the Long Dan teapot. The name “Long Dan,” meaning “Dragon Egg,” is derived from its distinctive egg-shaped silhouette, a design rooted in Ming Dynasty traditions. Historical references, such as Qing scholar Wu Meiding’s Yangxian Minghu Fu ( Ode to the Famous Teapots of Yangxian), describe this shape as “round like a ball, slightly elongated as the Dragon Egg.” Steeped in cultural symbolism, the Long Dan evokes Eastern mythology, where the dragon represents supreme auspiciousness, and its egg is a symbol of prosperity, protection, and fortune.

This teapot is made from Chaozhou’s prized Zhu Ni (red clay), celebrated for its fine texture, breathability, and exceptional heat retention. The clay’s unique properties enhance the aroma and flavour of tea, making it an ideal companion for Gongfu tea rituals. The Long Dan design features a smooth, oval body, a straight spout, and a simple yet harmonious structure, exuding both rustic charm and cultural significance. This Zhu Ni teapot is more than a functional vessel—it is a piece of cultural artistry, perfect for tea enthusiasts seeking an elevated brewing experience imbued with history and meaning.
